Shocking Choice by John McCain

WASHINGTON-- Senator John McCain just announced his choice for running mate: Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska. To follow is a statement by Rodger Schlickeisen, president of Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund.

“Senator McCain’s choice for a running mate is beyond belief. By choosing Sarah Palin, McCain has clearly made a decision to continue the Bush legacy of destructive environmental policies.

“Sarah Palin, whose husband works for BP (formerly British Petroleum), has repeatedly put special interests first when it comes to the environment. In her scant two years as governor, she has lobbied aggressively to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, pushed for more drilling off of Alaska’s coasts, and put special interests above science. Ms. Palin has made it clear through her actions that she is unwilling to do even as much as the Bush administration to address the impacts of global warming. Her most recent effort has been to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list, putting Big Oil before sound science. As unbelievable as this may sound, this actually puts her to the right of the Bush administration.

“This is Senator McCain’s first significant choice in building his executive team and it’s a bad one. It has to raise serious doubts in the minds of voters about John McCain’s commitment to conservation, to addressing the impacts of global warming and to ensuring our country ends its dependency on oil.”

I hope this choice seals the deal for Obama. We just can't have another four years of GOP crap.

ME TOO. That is what I am really truly hoping.

Yet another reason why I don't like Palin.

I'm sorry but, just because I'm a woman and would have voted for Clinton doesn't mean I'll just blindly vote based on sex alone. Clinton =/= Palin. Not to mention the whole socially conservative thing.

Of course Mom told me I wasn't a feminist when I said anyone (man or woman) with a newborn has no business running for President/VP. I think waiting a couple of years wouldn't be the end of the world. She says plenty of people have been raised by nannies. It seems to me that President/VP is not any random job. It's a life-encompassing job.

That's exactly it--I feel like this is really an insult to feminists, like, oh here honey, here's a chick to vote for.

I agree with you about the newborn stuff but I recognize that not everyone feels the same way. But since I am already not digging Palin, the fact that she wants this job while she has young kids totally creeps me out about her.

And I also want to add for clarity's sake that the fact that she's a woman and a mom have nothing at all to do with why I would never vote for a ticket with her on it. I would never vote for her because her environmental and social policies and beliefs conflict with my own to a drastic degree.

I love you both and had to introduce you to each other. You *know* we're all going to meet together in the same place one day. Have I ever told you I'm a friend cupid? I have introduced a lot of people who end up really liking each other. Kimbo, you're going to have to tell Lisa about your San Francisco connection someday. ~kisses for all~
