Books to read
Mar. 23rd, 2008 09:04 amBecause I don't have time to read many books these days, I've been keeping a list on Amazon. I created a custom wishlist called "Books to read" and I just keeping racking them up there. I now have a total of 172 books on the list. Ack!
I do read magazines, or I'd drown in my subscriptions. Magazines suit my current reading lifestyle better. I tend to read while eating, so I need something that can be broken up into 20-minute chunks without losing coherence. But magazines have book reviews in them, so my reading list continues to grow.
Apparently I'm really interested in memoirs. And they seem to be very popular these days. There are a million on my list.
I am fortunate to be a very fast reader. Once, in third grade, I carpooled with my classmate Karen. I was reading in the back seat and Karen yelled "Mom, look at how fast Lisa reads!" Her mom turned around and watched my eyes as I read the next paragraph on request. She gave me that wide-eyed smile that grown-ups use when they're talking down to kids, and said "You're not really reading that, right?" When I said I was, she snorted dismissively. "You're faking it. No kid can read that fast." And she turned around to start the car, as I sat in silent, conflicted shame. The accusation of lying really stung. Adults, be careful what you say to children--they really take it to heart, and their world is vivid! Anyway, I'm lucky in that when I get time to sit down with a book, I can blaze through it. But I never have an hour or two to devote to such leisurely pursuits, and when I do have time I usually spend it on LiveJournal. Hence, the one book I am currently reading, "Driven to Distraction," has been in my backpack for about a month, when it would take me about 2 hours to digest if I spent the time. Meanwhile, my "Books to read" list grows and grows...
I have this vision of my retirement: I live in the country, my house surrounded by tall grass and trees. I can see flowers outside my windows. I have a giant bathtub, and a few very comfortable chairs, some that rock and some that don't. And all I do is read and write.
