While I agree that suspending the gas tax during the busiest travel season is not going to make a big difference I don't agree with the "tax-to-discourage" approach. I also think that the idea that if we stop buying oil that we will also stop supporting people that "hate us the most" because they already control more of our economy than just petroleum.
The Saudis are smart and don't put their investments in one bag. They also own majority shares for many of the Fortune 500 companies so if people think that by not supporting oil you wouldn't be lining their pockets with their money then they're mistaken.
Also what makes people think that the proceeds those taxes are actually going towards alternative energy research?
