Some guy I found on craigslist just came over and finished setting up my other computer in like 20 minutes. Now I have two sets of drives mirroring each other, 100% automatic backup, 150 GB on one set and 1 terabyte on the other set. I've never had a terabyte before! I'm so excited. Now I can try to restore my itunes library that Evan erased, if in fact I backed it up correctly before. So I might not even have to re-rip all my hundreds of CDs in order to make a mix tape. Wish me luck!

Re-ripping CDs is not fun. Good luck with the restore!

Thanks! It seems to have sorta worked, but the album and artist names did not come through, so we're trying it again.

I never checked out Media Monkey, but it's on my list. Is it a jukebox type thing like itunes?

It lets you rip, organize and play music. IMHO, it's much more powerful that iTunes and it will interface with your iPOD devices.

One more question, while we're on the topic... what format do you save your music files in?

I always always ALWAYS rip music into FLAC format. It's lossless and is about 20% smaller than an uncompressed WAV file.

OK, I lied. I have more questions.

1. When I rip a CD in FLAC format, the default under Settings in MediaMonkey is "more compression" which is, like, 6 of 8. Should I move the ticker to 4 of 8 or anything? I'm not even sure what this means. Guess I can't go wrong with the default, probably, but it can't hurt to ask.

2. When you've ripped music into FLAC, can you burn the songs directly onto CD in a playable format, or do you have to convert them in MediaMonkey before burning?

Thanks so much! I've already downloaded MediaMonkey and I'm getting started now.

Always happy to answer questions about music!

1. The higher the compression number, the smaller the file. I always use the maximum. However, the file will take longer to compress. So, a four minute song compressed to level 1 might take 8 seconds while the same file compressed at level 8 might take 15 seconds. If you have a fast computer with plenty of memory you shouldn't have any problems with the maximum setting.

2. MediaMonkey will allow you to highlight the tracks you want to burn to a CD and then right-click and send them to a CD. It doesn't matter what format they are in (FLAC, WAV, MP3, etc.) It does the necessary conversions so that a CD will burn correctly.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Oh, SWEET! I am so excited now! I just ripped a few CDs in, can't wait to get the whole shebang going. The itunes restore never did work properly; I should have listened to you at first and gone straight to MediaMonkey a long time ago. This will be fun!! THANK YOU Blake, you're a sweetheart.
