Veterans Day
Nov. 11th, 2008 10:46 amIt's Veterans Day!
Is there an apostrophe in that somewhere?*
My father was in the Air Force. He was a pilot and a physician. My three cousins all got their education in medicine through the military, and one of my the three stayed in the Army for more than 20 years, dividing his time between seeing patients and running clinics. One of my employers is the Veterans Administration Medical Center; I enjoy serving the veterans more than I ever thought I would. I am a pacifist, and I hope for a time when war is no longer necessary. I cannot imagine joining the military. But I appreciate and admire those who risk their lives and give up their autonomy in the intent to serve and protect our freedoms. It is an honor to care for those who served.
*EDIT--From Wikipedia:
"The holiday is commonly printed as Veteran's Day or Veterans' Day in calendars and advertisements. While these spellings are grammatically acceptable, the United States government has declared that the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive case is the official spelling."
