  1. bleeding heart liberals:
I live in San Francisco for a reason.
  2. deadheads:
The Grateful Dead is a huge part of my life and deadheads are my people. To me, "deadhead" means a person who loves the music of the Grateful Dead, and most other assumptions are wide of the mark, although most people who are involved in the Dead scene (not necessarily the Dead family themselves) hold certain values or at least recognize that those values are associated with the community. But, like, it's really about the music, man.
  3. gender selection:
Yeah, I'm one of those weirdos who's actually thought about playing God with reproduction. It's less of a priority now, but for a while it seemed like we might not try to get pregnant at all without some sort of gender-sorting technology assistance.
  4. hippies:
The common perception is that hippies don't shower or hold jobs, and fry their brains with drugs. In my world, most of my best friends are at least part hippie. To me, that means that they don't buy into the fog of the mainstream, they care about the earth and other people, they're non-violent, and they know how to celebrate life and beauty. As Elvis Costello sang, what's so funny about peace, love, and understanding? Gay-bashing is out, but it's still OK to ridicule hippies and fat women. But that's OK. Since I found my inner hippie, I've been happier than ever before. I wouldn't change a thing.
  5. kauai:
I'm starting to sound all misunderstood and stuff... let's bring it back down to the earth. Kauai is my 2nd favorite Hawaiian island. I can't wait to go back and visit the queen's bath, and snorkel down Ko'olau Road.
  6. lloyd cole:
"Are you ready to be heartbroken?" LC is one of my favorite singer/songwriters ever. He reminds me of my over-the-moon romantic fling with Alex from London when I was 21. After Alex and I broke up dramatically, I actually spent a long time writing a seriously clever fan letter to Lloyd Cole, because I knew he was single and he'd just written a song about looking for the perfect woman to marry, and why shouldn't he at least meet me? But I've never been very good at fandom. I didn't send the letter, and by the time I saw him in concert in Hollywood the next year he was married. He lives in Connecticut now and I got an email from him last year when I ordered his newest album direct. My heart did skip a beat.
  7. rivers:
Water, water, water. If I could (and if I could stand being at least half-naked in front of anyone else, anymore) I would spend all my time in water. Rivers, lakes, streams, oceans, pools.
  8. spinal tap:
    The movie. I love it.
  9. the big island:
Until a few years ago, I had a friend who lived on the Big Island of Hawaii, and I went to visit her every 2-3 years. The Big Island feels like one of my homes. It is full of fantastic hidden places. Just avoid the boring resorts. Everything else is amazing.
  10. volcanoes:
The friend who lived on the Big Island lived on the side of the active volcano there. Now she lives just below Mount St. Helens, another active volcano. And some other friends, a beautiful little family, just moved to a pineapple ranch on an active volcano in Costa Rica.

Randomly heard Uncle John's Band two days ago and almost had to pull over and cry. Dated a Deadhead once then had a few years of really good friends who were DHs. So many memories connected to the Dead.

I love rivers also. The movement, the flow....

I plan a trip to Hawaii at some point in the near future. Maui is pretty big with the midwives I know.

Yes, the Dead are great for memories. Their music has this sort of built-in nostalgia.

I've never been to Maui. Yet. The Big Island feels like a big fertility zone--it's pregnant and growing, giving birth daily while the volcano is active.

Great meme! Would definitely do this one myself if I had more time for it. Maybe later today...

It's nice to learn things like this about one's LJ friends :)

P.S. I agree 100% about your "hippie" comments. I proudly claim my hippie status that I seem to have achieved solely by virtue of the fact that I breastfeed, baby-wear, don't circ, like to buy organic, etc. :-P

Exactly. And you don't run around in ratty sandals with unbrushed hair smelling of patchouli, now do you? Hippie is not a fashion trend, I always say. :-)

I know, I didn't have time for it, but I did it anyway because I really like this one. I hope I get to read yours!

Oops, posted twice as my alter ego, but you know who I am I hope. :-)

Dare I say it?

1) I don't buy into the fog of the mainstream.
2) I care about the earth and other people. (Even though I don't always like being around lots of people, I can still care.)
3) I'm non-violent. Granted, I *am* the most well-armed pacifist you'll ever meet, but still...
4) I know how to celebrate life and beauty.
5) I dig Elvis Costello (OK, I just corrected that. I initially wrote that I *DID* Elvis Costello which is an entirely different thing!)
6) I think the Pop-O-Pies speed punk version of "Truckin'" is the best. EVER.

Therefore, by your criteria, am I a *gasp* *shudder* HIPPIE?

Well, I'll definitely be in good company.

*grin*

Just don't tell anyone, 'kay?
