What do you guys think of this post and the OP's comments?

I'd especially like to hear from folks who have been to Mexico, and not just the tourist spots.

Speaking as someone who also has to eat a pretty basic diet without a lot of room for wiggle room and being afraid to eat out - and reading a lot of posts similar to this (but with different food restrictions) in related communities here - I have to admit I'm scratching my head trying to figure out what you're concerned with. I know your desire to be respectful of different people and cultures, so I'm wondering if you think there's something prejudicial about this? Is it the lard comment?

If so, I did a bunch of my fieldwork in a Mexican immigrant congregation - many here (legally and illegally) first generation. The church did family style dinners each month where members cooked THE BEST food I've ever tasted and very willingly shared their recipes with the white girl (not meant with disrespect at all - I had a very good and loving relationship with the people there and they playfully teased me but were very kind about it - like family). Most of the recipes did include lard. And that's probably why they tasted so good =)
