I might eat, like, this entire pineapple.

The best thing about the University of Hawaii was the mounds of fresh pineapple in the cafeteria every day. EVERY. DAY. I had no need for any other food. Except Island Snow shave ice on the beach every afternoon.

Really? Double awesome! Which campus did he go to--Manoa (Honolulu) or Hilo? I went to Manoa, just for a summer, between my freshman and sophomore years. Best summer EVER. Two classes in the morning, nap on the beach in the afternoon, and dancing every night.

MMMMMMMMM, Matsumoto, girl, I totally KNOW! But Island Snow was right there by the walkway to Waikiki that we took every day, and we only went through Haleiwa a couple of times that whole summer, when we rented a car.

Also, Jo Jo's on Kauai--lots of li hing mui on top, wow! And honestly my favorite is probably Scandi's in Kona, run by some funny old wise-cracking haole, with special combinations you had to try in order. He'd only let you have a #2 if you'd had a #1 first, at least in theory. We'd get right off the plane, zip over to Scandi's and order a #3. Delicious.

Don't get a pregnant girl talking about food.

Don't get a wanderlusty girl talking about Oahu! I love it there so much. My favorite aunt is the head rector at the Parish of Saint Clement (http://www.stclem.org/stclem/) and I've been there twice to visit her and once on our honeymoon and I swear it just gets better every time. I haven't been to Kauai yet but it's the next island I want to go to!

My grandparents used to live on Oahu so we went there when I was little. Then I went to UH Manoa for the summer, sophomore year in college. Then my friends moved to the Big Island and some other friends moved to Kauai so I went every year or two for a long while. I miss it so much. I love it. I especially love the Big Island. Kauai is also awesome. I've never been to Maui. I wish I could just hop over to Waikiki on one of those cheap weekend packages every couple of months. Need to land a contract there or something!

Any fantastic recommendations about stuff in/around Hilo?

Depends on what you like to do. Pahoa is a little hippie town that can be fun to visit, not much there but interesting people to talk to. The red road, along the coast makai of Pahoa, has some lovely spots to check out, like climbing down the rocks to Kehena beach where you can swim with dolphins (but you must be a GOOD ocean swimmer and only go out when the locals go out, it can be pretty gnarly to get back in), and the warm pond at Ahanalui is a lovely place to swim. If you're on Hilo side you have to go up to Volcanoes National Park; their lodge has REALLY good dinners if you are up for a fancy date. There's an orchid seller on the way up to Volcano that is a really amazing visit if you're into flowers; you can have them sent home directly which is nice. And north of Hilo, the Hamakua coast is so beautiful, Akaka Falls, the botanical gardens (need LOTS of bug spray but so worth it) and all the way up that road is Waipio Valley, which is such a cool place to visit but you kinda need to be prepared. We camped down there a couple of times. In Hilo itself there is shave ice at a fish & tackle store, Itsu's I think it's called, and my favorite dinner place is Cafe Pesto. Their little pizzas are SO delish and their pasta dishes are amazing too. I loved having mahi mahi and eggs for breakfast at Ken's, a local diner; they have macadamia nut pancakes too for a change of pace. That's all I can think of for highlights off the top of my head, but there are so many cool places to check out, especially natural features, the lava, the beaches, the steam caves and warm ponds. The volcanic nature of the island and the local culture is just so cool.

Are you going soon?
