The Kim family tragedy is freaking me out a little bit in a personal way because apparently they were headed to Gold Beach, Oregon. Gold Beach is where my dad crashed his plane. I have lately been wondering if the wreckage is still there in the mountains--apparently it's often left if it's in a place where it would be difficult to remove. But they had to go there to get his body, so I don't know.

Aubrey is here watching Blue (Bless you, Aubrey!) so I am supposed to be working--and I am, but I took a short break to write this. I hope I don't get in trouble with Aubrey. :P Anyway, I just wanted to note that Evan saw a neurosurgeon this morning who showed us his ruptured disk on the MRI and recommended surgery, which will hopefully be scheduled for next week. I don't know anything about recovery times or measures yet.

Hey! Yeah! My December is getting crazy and we don't know what schedule things are happening on, so I'm not sure how we're going to work it out or when but I can't wait to get these boys together again and let them roam free.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, it was yesterday. I'm officially old now!

I'm glad Evan is figuring out what's wrong with him! Eeek surgery, but it's good that there's a possible resolution comming.

Spinal surgery isn't anywhere near as freaky sounding as it used to be. A ruptured disc can often be fixed and the patient mobile and recovered in 3 to 7 days. (I don't mean painting the ceiling mobile, I mean moving without restriction/severe pain).

Depends on the damage and how much they have to do. But it is a common and therefore, much practised, proceedure. :-)

I think the Oregon thing is freaking a lot of people. Sorry you have extra freak added.

*hug*

Yes, this is what we've been hearing--seems that everyone and their brother has had this particular surgery, and the recovery is quick, thank goodness! It's actually exciting to have a resolution in sight.

much love to all three of you

I take it the disk has fragmented? (Usually surgery isn't the first option for herniated disks.) Or is it just because of his current pain levels/immobility? Ouchy in any case. Hopefully it will be a simple, out-patient sort of thing for him. Will they be doing a lumbar microdiscectomy, or something else?

You're in my thoughts; hope all goes well. If you need any support, kid care, anything -- please let me know.

Hi--I didn't get to talk to the surgeon much as I was chasing Blue around, but I do know that when he first looked at the MRI film he exclaimed "Whoa! That's a big one!" I don't know if it's fragmented or not, but it's been about three weeks with no significant improvement, and Evan's taking ever higher levels of strong narcotics which MDs tend to get nervous about. Evan wants the surgery because he feels like he's missing out on a lot of things (i.e. Blue's life) and all he does is literally lie on the couch and groan occasionally, so the idea of waiting weeks to months to get better is a bit much for him. I think they're going to do an endoscopic microdiscectomy, so yeah! It'll be outpatient.

Thanks so much for everything, as usual. I'm really not trying to blow you off, about your previous offer or anything else. I'm not even here much lately because of work, and Evan does not feel up to traveling, so we haven't been able to avail ourselves of your help yet. We'll lean on you sometime, though, I'm sure of it! :-)

What a relief for you both to finally know what's going on ~ and that it can be repaired. I hope that Ev gets that surgery soon and recoups quickly!

I remember you telling me that your dad's plane crashed in Oregon, yet didn't know exactly where tho ~ so yeah, I can understand how upsetting the recent news about the Kim family would be to you. {{{hugs}}}} Did I ever tell you how Gregg's dad went out to the plane wreckage of where his 3 other kids died? It was all there ~ about a mile hike from this road. Their plane crashed in Canada, and there were some folks in the nearby town that remembered when it crashed and were able to talk to Marvin about it. It took him 30 years to get there . . . pretty heavy for him still.

miss you lots . . .

xoxo

Yes, in fact that's when I started wondering whether/if I should try to find the wreckage of my dad's plane. I can't imagine losing three kids at once, can you? I think I would want to die, for real.

I miss you too, SO much!

Hi there and happy Sabbath!! I was browsing LJ looking for people who are Adventist and found this journal through your son's. I was wondering if I could add both to my friends list?

The Kim tragedy struck me really hard, but I'm not sure why. Maybe because it seems too many families are being left without fathers these days (Steve Irwin's, Kim family, and others). :(

I hope Even is feeling better soon. I'm also getting to know about MRIs and neurosurgeons and surgeries (I have a tumor in my shoulder). I'll keep him in my prayers. :)

Hi! You are welcome to add both to your friends list. I'm not really a mainstream Adventist, in fact I guess I'm a bit of a maverick, and I'm not averse to a bit of vulgarity so be forewarned. Otherwise, welcome! :-) I'll read you from neuraltube.

Yes, the families-without-fathers thing always strikes me. My dad crashed his plane when I was 7.

What kind of tumor do you have in your shoulder? I'm guessing it's benign?

I'm not really mainstream Adventist, either. I'm conservative, but a lot more open minded than the typical Adventist. That has earned me the label "liberal" from some. :P

They don't know what kind of tumor it is, but guessing it's benign. My consultation with a neurosurgeon is on Dec. 22.

I'm sorry about your dad... :(:(

The doctor said he wasn't too concerned about it. He gave me a couple of options. I could either wait six months and see what happens, going back in for another MRI, undergo radiation therapy, or have surgery. We're waiting for six months. No insurance. :P

P.S. I just looked at your profile and saw the birthchoices community--joined, thanks! I'm a doula, among other things. Are you by chance TTC?

I wish! We're trying to avoid conception, but I'm learning as much as I can right now. My husband and I have only been married a year and want to wait at least another year before having a child. We've been talking a lot lately about different options for childbirth and childrearing.
