Bad Timing

OK, I have to remember this.

It is absolutely STUPID and POINTLESS for me to attempt to work during the day. First thing in the morning I can whip out a task or two, but I'm basically sleepwalking after that until the sun goes down. Or at least until 6:30 or 7pm.

Some of my jobs are things I have to do during the day, but they mostly involve meetings and short, varied tasks, so that works out OK most of the time. (Plus, I have an hourly rate for the consulting stuff.) But for long sessions of computer work, nighttime is the right time, baby.

I just spent two days TRYING to work, fighting off sleep, and I got very little done. Which means that it cost me more to bring the babysitter down here with me than what I earned over the weekend. Not good. I shouldn't do things this way again.

When I was in graduate school, I became convinced that I couldn't write anything if the sun was still up. I can be exhausted all day, but after dark I wake up and feel fine. Gets tricky with kids since they won't let you sleep in. It gets really tricky when they're in school, which starts way too early. Non-nightowls think you should go to bed like "normal" people, but they just don't get it. Fortunately I've always been good at managing in a state of sleep deprivation, but that is less true as I get older.

Yes, I remember your nap-with-A-and-then-work-into-the-wee-hours schedule. And yes, it DOES get harder with age, doesn't it? I just can't seem to feel normal anymore, no matter what I do. School start times have always been a huge reason I've considered home schooling. Evan and I are BOTH night owls so there's no good solution for getting the kids to school and still being able to function. Hmmm...
