Last night, when I finally went to bed, as I lay there trying to drift off I somehow got to thinking about age and dying. And for some reason Kurt Vonnegut popped into my head, and I thought about him for a while, wondering how old he is now and imagining how I would feel if I heard that he died. It was totally random and I don't remember thinking about anyone else in that way. Not 24 hours later, now I hear that he has died, and in fact that he's been ill for several weeks.

So it goes.

"So it goes" has been a part of my speech since ... forever. Since high school, when I took a Lit of the 70's class and read Vonnegut for the first time.

And now I can't remember which book that's from. It's been many years since I've read him; maybe time to start again.

I think he used it in pretty much all of them. And "and so on." In a way all his books are parts of a whole, KWIM?

Isn't that true for most authors who write several books? :)

Well, kindof, but to me it's true of Vonnegut's work more than most, with the recurring character of Kilgore Trout showing up in so many, and with the general themes usually revolving around coincidence and intertwining of lives and circumstances, along with the goofy drawings in several books and the use of catch phrases like "so it goes," etc. It's one of the things I love about him. I haven't read every single book, mind you.

Also, I really think "So it goes" is... character- and book-specific, somehow. Don't know why I think that. Just do.

It may well be--I don't remember for sure.

Okay, good night! Paul is going to give me big frowny faces when he reads this and looks at the time stamp.

But I napped today with Calvin -- I really needed it -- and now I'm just starting to wind down! Feh.

If I didn't stay up late I'd be a faceless, personality-less zombie in no time. As it is, I'm just a sleepless zombie. Good night!

Oh, and imagining you and Paul together late at night with the kids asleep makes me smile... and miss you guys!

So if you start thinking of me, age, and dying and how you'd feel if you heard I died - warn me, k? Yes, I know - narcissistic much?

In other news, I should be back Saturday evening. I'll call you.

Ha ha! I will specifically NOT think about that if it makes you feel any better. I am so not superstitious, as you know, so it's funny for me to even notice such coincidences as this one, much less point them out. But still.

Blue mentions you pretty much every day. He's starting to be able to articulate the "r" in your name. At least sometimes. Yay!

See you soon; safe travels.
