I think caffeine is the most underestimated drug of our time. By that I mean that we underestimate the effects of it and the level of addiction to it in our population. I came to this conclusion at the Hog Farm some 12-odd years ago, when I noticed that as everyone rolled out of their sleeping bags and rubbed their eyes in the dawning light, they headed for the coffee stand--not the water truck, not the port-a-potties, but the coffee stand. And later, at the Oregon Country Fair, I was struck by the giant lines of sleepy coffee-drinkers standing in tie-dyed lines with reusable mugs, while the lines at the breakfast places selling eggs and potatoes and juice were short. Hmmm... Maybe it's just hippies that are addicted to coffee en masse.

Now, I'm not decrying caffeine as a universally bad thing. I think it's probably dangerous, but also great, and I drink it when I need it--cheap legal speed! I just try to avoid addiction by drinking coffee only two or three days in a row, when I'm running low on sleep and absolutely have to get something done. This way, not only do I avoid headaches from caffeine withdrawal, but it pretty much fires me up the way it's supposed to every time.

Anyway, the point of this post is that at one of my hospitals, there is a coffee stand in the lobby, and taped near the register is an article about a doctor in Arizona who has started to give his surgical patients IV caffeine in order to avoid the withdrawal headache that comes with being n.p.o. from midnight prior to surgery. Of course he doesn't give it to everyone, only those who identify a need. But in a way, that's brilliant, isn't it? IV caffeine. Much quicker and cleaner than drinking a syrupy milkshakey 400-calorie concoction like the ones I favor. And without the stomach upset! What sort of permit would one have to have in order to offer IV caffeine in a shop?

Oh, that would be ME that would need that npo pre-op IV...lol...anyway, your wrong - it's not only Hippies that need it my dear, well okay, I'm thinking some of the folks I see at the coffee shops are not rolled into that label, but you can not JUDGE a BOOK by it's COVER UP! Look at me, okay, don't look at me...b/c I stand out like a sore hippy even though I try desperately not to! Look at some one like my pop - he's totally undercover & was a Marine to boot (camp, lol)! Aaron's mom gave my dad a cup one year for xmas that says "Coffee, the last legal high" - so true! EVERYONE DOES IT...that's why the government hasn't made it illegal....we all have to work to pay enron, right?
