Microwave popcorn

There is no need to buy microwave popcorn full of fake butter by-products. Make it at home using real butter or margarine and your favorite seasonings.
Microwave popcorn on the cheap:
- 1/2 cup popcorn
- 2-3 tbsp. melted butter or margarine
- salt and seasonings (e.g. spices, parmesan cheese etc.) to taste
Recipe:
- Pour kernels into a standard brown paper lunch bag
- Fold the top over twice and press down firmly; each fold should be 1/2 inch deep.
- Place bag in microwave on turn table.
- Cook on high 2-3 minutes, or until pops are 5 seconds apart.
- Toss with melted butter, salt, and seasonings of choice.

As the matter of fact, when she taught me how to do this in about 1996 or 1997, I had been embracing a 100% vegan diet for seven years. I broke my plant-based diet and started eating butter. I couldn't help it because I wouldn't eat margarine due to the trans fats.
Anyway, now you've given me a hankering for some popcorn. :-) I think tonight we'll have to watch a movie and make popcorn. Whenever possible, I cook it in coconut oil, which adds to the flavor even more, yummy!

Date: 2007-09-01 06:08 pm (UTC)I have very fond memories of the popcorn my mom used to make on the stove. There is nothing that makes it taste better. I am a slave to the convenience of a microwave, however, since I can barely manage my life even with all the shortcuts. Someday I will get a wild hair and try it stovetop again. I'll try to remember coconut oil, that sounds fantastic!
And I can certainly understand breaking one's veganimity for butter. Mmmmmmmm, butter.
