twirlgrrlThis is so right on! I don't know what is happening, but lately I've noticed a lot of "I'm not a feminist, but" disclaimers from younger women. It seems that the word 'feminist' has taken on some erroneous meanings and assumptions, and it baffles me. Maybe we have Rush Limbaugh to thank. Anyway, check this out:

Yes. I can be a stay-at-home mom and be a feminist.
I think it's time for a new feminist movement. It's time to reclaim the word, the concept, the ideals. Because if I have to have one more arguement with a woman who claims to not be a feminist on excuses as flimsy as "I don't like labels" I'm going to gouge my eyes out with a rusty spoon.

Date: 2007-10-01 02:15 pm (UTC)I personally don't get the "I don't like labels" thing. I apply a bunch of labels to myself and feel not a bit reduced by them. Although some, like "hippie" and "feminist," do bear a bit of explaining in this day and age.
