OK, here's a lighter one, one that I first read in that same Advanced English class and committed to memory immediately.

The Guitarist Tunes Up

With what attentive courtesy he bent
Over his instrument;
Not as a lordly conquerer who could
Command both wire and wood,
But as a man with a loved woman might,
Inquiring with delight
What slight essential things she had to say
Before they started, he and she, to play.

Excellent. Here is a fav of mine which Michael Hedges set to guitar once upon a time:

i carry your heart with me

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

I love to sing it to Rachel. On our tenth anniversary we went to The Horn of the Moon restaurant in Vermont and I sang that to her after dinner. It's funny, I know I also gave her something but I don't remember what. I guess it mattered less than the song.
