I know, I know, the meme says top ten results, but I couldn't leave it there, especially since my chosen career (which I very much enjoy) didn't make the top 10. It's #14.

1. Go to Career Cruising
2. Put in Username: nycareers and Password: landmark.
3. Take their "Career Matchmaker" questions.
4. Post the top ten results

1. Sport Psychology Consultant (WHAT?! Not interested in sports or the psychology thereof)
2. Psychologist (OK, I see a theme already)
3. Editor (YES! I would love to do this)
4. Medical Secretary (Hm, sortof related to what I do I guess, except I like to be in charge)
5. Career Counselor
6. Adoption Counselor
7. Professor (I can imagine it)
8. Personal Financial Planner (not so much)
9. Bank Teller (definitely not... where are they getting this money stuff?)
10. Addictions Counselor
11. Communications Specialist
12. Print Journalist (one of my early ambitions)
13. Market Research Analyst (nope)
14. Health Records Professional (DING DING DING DING!!)
15. Critic (ha ha, definitely)
16. Translator (no, that's the husband)
17. Humanitarian Aid Worker
18. Mental Health Nurse (totally--I've always loved crazy)
19. Funeral Director (ha ha)
20. Administrative Assistant (BTDT)
21. Industrial-Organizational Psychologist (sounds intriguing... tell me more)
22. Marriage and Family Therapist
23. Community Worker
24. Religious Worker
25. School Counselor
26. Bookkeeper (not)
27. Clergy (can't say I haven't thought about it)
28. Occupational Therapist
29. High School Teacher
30. ESL Teacher
31. Economic Development Officer (nope)
32. Foreign Language Instructor
33. Child and Youth Worker
34. Speech-Language Pathologist
35. Midwife (I'm a doula, does that count?)
36. Website Designer
37. Hotel Desk Clerk (not in this life, thank the pope)
38. Public Health Nurse
39. Research Analyst (Financial) (YUCK)
40. Economist

So, aside from the careers in which I'd be working with money or sports, I think these results were pretty right on. I aspired to be either a teacher or a journalist/editor, and it was the medical focus in my family (along with a Time magazine article on growing job fields, and multiple peanut-gallery comments about low salaries in my chosen professions) that refocused me on the health information track. I'm very happy with my career, especially the working-for-myself part and the fact that I'm involved in something I feel is essentially ethical. I never thought about being a psychologist or counselor until I was all grown up, but it makes sense because I've always loved to mediate, analyze, and support others emotionally. I think that would be a really tough career path though. I'm not sure how analysts process all the empathy, trauma and frustration that their careers entail.
