Defining self

How would you define yourself in a few written words to a general audience? Nothing fancy or elaborate, just an outline. What would you choose as the relevant definitions?

For instance, I would define myself something like this: I'm a 40-ish married mother of a 3-year-old, business owner, San Franciscan, native Californian, health information consultant, cancer registrar. If I was getting a little bit personal I would add: Deadhead, Seventh-day Adventist Christian, love to read and write, internet/LJ addict. I would not get more personal than that for a general audience.

Whoa, that got a little long. But you get the idea.

Please comment. Define yourself in a few words for a general audience. This is a social experiment. ;-)

So I'm not getting overly creative here, I'm borrowing from you. Here goes...

I'm a 40-ish married mamma of one boy and one girl; both teenagers, 4th generation native Seattleite, Scandinavian flavored, music-loving, somewhat crunchy, green-focused human being.

How's that?

Since I've just recently chosen to do this at church (we're having some issues with a former pastor's wife that still is a member and excepts special treatment and I'm trying to make it clear that I'm not her), this is what I told them.

I'm Genevieve, a wife to Geof and mom to Robert (3) and Mikaela (16 months). I like to read, sew, crochet and bake and spend time with my family. I'm a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Lutheran Church, and I *happen* to be married to the pastor.

I think that human beings are deeply nuanced creatures and that there's really no such thing as a general audience. What we reveal to our therapist isn't what we reveal to our mother, a best friend, or a group attending a concert or convention. We speak to people differently here than in Paris or Bangkok. Certainly there are core, indisputable facts -- our age, our children, where we currently live, where we call home, our spiritual and religious stance -- but which facts are relevant to which audience? I think it's more complex than being more or less personal.

Yes, I agree that it's a complex question, but I was really going for a surface answer, so I tried not to make the question too long. I had started with a specific scenario (group attending a convention works, actually) but then I just gave an example instead.

I'm a 28-year-old student and a full-time employee of both a data processing company and a maniacal toddler. I'm not afraid of turning 30; have a penchant for pumpkin pie Blizzards and collecting art that scares me; and I have celebrated Christmas in a cemetery, complete with convenience store egg nog and Moon Pies. At least three times a week, I hear the phrase, “Oh honestly, Erin.”

because i will stall or avoid doing this if i put pressure on myself to perform, i will just give you a list of stuff. but honestly i feel like "general audience" leaves me with questions.... so these are things i might put in there
