Proverbs

Evan told me about a proverb used often in Japan. I like to juxtapose it with a well-known English proverb to illustrate the difference between cultures.

English proverb: The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
Japanese proverb: The nail that sticks up is hammered down.

I think that's also the difference between private business versus public sector/civil services. As a private business customer, whining will get you everywhere. Whine to a civil servant and your forms go to the bottom of the heap. :)

It's like that at city hall in Oakland. After I moved there and had to go file some paperwork, it was so simple and quick and friendly, I was like "Where am I? Is this a really a government building?"
